Home to some of the best universities in the state, the area also includes a number of community and techni¬cal colleges to serve the needs of its residents. ![]() As the largest university in the Triad area, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro enrolls more than 15,000 students and offers over 100 undergraduate programs, 59 master's programs and 22 doctoral programs. In spite of its size, UNCG is able to offer small class sizes, where the student-teacher ratio is about 14:1. Chartered in 1891 as one of the first in the North Carolina state system, UNCG has grown to be one of the best research schools in the state. Additionally, the university involves its students in 140 different organizations as well as 13 athletic teams. Traditionally African-American, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University were founded in 1891. N.C. A&T joined with the University of North Carolina system in 1972 and began its doctoral program in 1993. Located close to downtown Greensboro, the university enrolls more than 10,000 students in 99 undergraduate programs, 50 master's degree programs and five doctoral programs. N.C. A&T focuses on programs in engineering, technology, and science, and is one of three engineering colleges in North Carolina where students can obtain their Ph.D. With a reputation for academics as well as its athletic prowess, Wake Forest University is hailed as one of the best universities in the country. Founded in 1834 in the eastern North Carolina town of Wake Forest, the school moved to Winston-Salem in 1956. Wake Forest is a private university that offers baccalaureate, masters and doctoral degrees in 34 different programs. With an undergraduate and graduate enrollment of about 6,400, Wake Forest's student-teacher ratio is 10: l. A private college located in a small town, Elon University was founded in 1889 by the Christian Church, now known as the United Church of Christ. With an enrollment of about 4,800 students, Elon offers 50 fields of study as well as graduate programs in physical therapy, business administration and education. Another benefit that Elon students gain is the opportunity for learning through internships. Seventy five percent of students who graduate from Elon have completed an intern ship or co-ed work, a number that is three times the national average. Serving those who seek an associate's degree or additional training, technical and communities colleges abound in the Triad. Guilford Technical Community College was founded in 1958 and offered two classes to its 50 students. Today, Guilford Tech has grown to over 11,000 students enrolled in curriculum programs and 20,000 in continuing education. A two-year accredited community college, the school offers certificates, one and two year programs and two-year college transfer as well as extra training for local businesses and classes for those seeking personal enrichment. Located in Winston-Salem, Forsyth Technical Community College offers day and evening classes at its two campuses: the Main Campus and the West Campus. Additionally, Forsyth Tech has six off-campus centers to serve students throughout the county. Offering associate's degrees, diploma and certificate programs and continuing education, Forsyth Tech is a regional Cisco training academy and offers other technical training through the Thomas H. Davis iTEC Center. As demand for technical training increases in the Triad area, Forsyth Tech continues to expand its facilities.
